There is a lot more to a day’s racing than the race itself, both before and after. Here are some tips that will hopefully help you make the most of your afternoon at Carlisle Racecourse.

The Weighing Room: Adjacent to the Parade Ring, here is where all the jockeys will weigh out before each race. Their total weight including the saddle should meet the weight set out in the racecard for that particular horse in that particular race. After the race the jockeys will weigh in and their weight must be basically the same as before they started. On racedays there are four stewards ensuring each race is run to the correct rules and regulations.

The Pre-Parade Ring: Situated beyond the main Parade Ring. Around 20-25 minutes before their race the horses will stretch their muscles here without their saddles on. This is a good opportunity for racegoers to assess a horse’s fitness and attitude.

The Parade Ring: This is a must see for all racegoers as this gives them the opportunity to see the horses close-up as they parade prior to racing. There is always a good atmosphere around the Parade Ring and around 15-20 minutes before each race the horses wills start to enter the Parade Ring.

Having a Bet: The main places to bet are at the Tote windows located throughout the racecourse, the bookmakers located in the betting ring in front of the main Grandstand, or the Tote betting shop, adjacent to the main Grandstand. You have time to place your bet after seeing your horse in the parade Ring and prior to taking your position to watch the race. For instructions on how to bet please go to our Betting Guide (found in the New to Racing page).

Where to Watch: Watch from the steppings on the Main Grandstand, by the rails close to the winning line, in the small stand adjacent to the main stand, on the Lowther Steppings above the Weighing Room, in the picnic area by the one furlong marker or in the bar or restaurant area in which you are enjoying a drink or a bite to eat.

The Winner’s Enclosure: After the race the horses are met by their stable lads/lasses and the first four horses to finish are led into the Winner’s Enclosure, which is located within the Parade Ring area. Cheer your winning horse into the Enclosure before the horses are unsaddled and the jockeys will then take the saddle and weigh in. There is a presentation to winning connections after every race at Carlisle, on the Winners podium in the Winner’s Enclosure.
